General information
Citizen of all countries need an official invitation by the inviting person, business or travel agent, before applying for a Russian visa. It is obligatory to register your passport at the local Russian registration bureau. With a tourist visa the hotel will automatically register you upon arrival. Before submitting your visa application, it is advised to contact the consulate in your country and ask them all necessary questions.
Citizen of most countries require a visa based on an original invitation letter issued by a private person, business or travel agent. There are different types of visa depending on the purpose of your visit, which is stated in the application form. It is not possible to obtain a visa at the airport or boarder, when entering Russia.
Types of visa
The most common types of visa are Business, Private and Tourist.
Business visa - For visitors who travel to Russia with purpose of business.
An official invitation letter is needed from a firm registered in Russia. Fax copies are accepted. With a business visa you can stay up to one year in Russia.
Private visa - For all persons who are visiting friends or relatives in Russia. An official invitation of the inviting person is required. No fax or email copies are accepted. The document has to be the original, registered invitation letter. As holder of a private visa you can stay up to 6 months in Russia.
Tourist visa - For travelers who are visiting Russia with purpose of tourism.
When applying for a tourist visa, you need an invitation from a Russian travel agent and proof of a confirmed hotel booking. Fax copies of those documents are accepted by the consulates. A tourist visa allows you to stay up to 4 weeks in Russia.

Consulate fees
The official visa application form, which has to be filled in, you can only receive at the Russian Embassy nearest to you. The official invitation letter must be sent to you by the inviting person, business or travel agent. Fax copies are only accepted for tourist and business visa. The private visa requires an original invitation letter registered at the local Russian registration office. Be sure to send all documents by courier and enclose a pre-paid, self addressed return courier envelope. No other documents are needed.
Processing & Fees
Fees differ for each country and all consulate fees must be paid before application, otherwise the consulate will not accept your application. The average term for processing is about 10-14 working days. Time of processing depends on the consulate and type of visa. Express visa can be issued within 1-3 working days. The cost is double of the price of a standard one. Please contact your consulate for exact details. Consulate fees start from 30 USD to 200 USD depending on the type of visa
